Using Artificial Plants in Industrial Style Interiors

Industrial rooms are defined by hard, cool materials: exposed brick, blackened steel, concrete, reclaimed timber and a lot of visible structure. Greenery is the counterweight, and because the backdrop is strong you can generally spend less and still get a good result than you could in a pale, refined scheme where every flaw shows. What follows is organised by budget, with what each tier realistically buys you.

Under £30: one good plant per surface

At this level you are buying a single well-shaped plant for a shelf, a desk or the end of a worktop. Broad leaves work particularly well against brick, because the leaf outline is large enough to register against a busy background. The Artificial Monstera Plant - 60cm is 60cm at £22.99 and its split leaves stay legible against pointing and mortar lines where a fine-leaved plant would disappear.

Also in this bracket, upright bamboo forms give height for very little money. The 90cm (3ft) Fat Leaf Artificial Bamboo Plants Trees is 90cm at £26.99, and against a dark wall the pale canes read as a graphic line, which suits the aesthetic well.

£30 to £70: floor-standing plants that hold a corner

This is the most productive tier for industrial spaces, because it buys a plant tall enough to matter beside a steel-framed window or a concrete column. Palms are the traditional choice in warehouse conversions and they earn it: the fronds are strongly shaped, they read well from a distance, and they contrast with straight architectural lines rather than competing with them.

The 90cm Artificial Areca Palm Tree - Large is 90cm at £33.99 and suits a lower position, perhaps beside a sofa or on a low unit. Stepping up, the 140cm Artificial Palm Tree - Extra Large reaches 140cm at £49.99 and is the point at which a plant starts to hold its own against a full-height window. The wider selection is under palm trees.

£70 to £130: the plant becomes a feature, or the pot does

Two ways to spend here. Either buy a larger, more sculptural plant, or buy an ordinary plant and an exceptional container. In an industrial room the second route is often the better value, because metal containers are exactly on-brief and they last.

The 51cm XL Silver Metal Planter by Leaf is 51cm tall at £99.99 and is a substantial object in its own right; drop a mid-priced plant into it and the combination reads as considered. The full range sits under metal planters.

On the plant side, spiky architectural forms suit steel and concrete better than soft ones. The 155cm Artificial UV Resistant XL Triple Yucca Tree Plant Spiky Dark is 155cm at £119.99 and is specified as UV resistant, which makes it a sensible choice for the enormous glazed elevations these conversions tend to have.

Over £130: statement scale

Industrial buildings usually have the ceiling height to justify something genuinely large, and a single tall specimen does more for a double-height space than any number of medium plants. The 200cm Traveller Palm Artificial Tree Realistic stands 200cm at £139.99, with a broad fan-shaped crown that spreads to 120cm and reads clearly from across a large open floor. Place it where the ceiling is highest and where side light from a window will catch it.

How to allocate a fixed budget

  1. Spend roughly two thirds of the total on one large piece and the remainder on two small ones. A single tall plant plus two surface plants beats five medium plants in almost every industrial room.
  2. Buy the container for the large piece before buying more plants. It is the item most visible at eye level.
  3. Leave brick and concrete walls largely clear. These surfaces are the feature; greenery should sit in front of them, not obscure them.
  4. Keep everything in the cool half of the green range. Warm yellow-greens fight grey concrete and oxidised metal.

Positioning against hard materials

Two placements consistently work. The first is directly in front of a steel-framed window, where the plant breaks the grid of the glazing bars and is side-lit for most of the day. The second is at the base of a structural column or an exposed pipe run, where a plant gives the vertical something to terminate against at floor level. Avoid the middle of a large open floor unless the ceiling is genuinely lofty, and avoid setting plants against the most textured wall in the room, where the outline will be lost.

Where to browse by size

Smaller pieces for shelves and desks are filtered under under 50cm, taller specimens under large artificial plants, and the whole tree range under artificial trees. Work spaces and studios with the same aesthetic are covered by office plants. Delivery within the UK is free on orders over £30, and returns are accepted for 30 days.
